Bot Armes sind größere Ansammlungen an Fake-Profilen, die automatisiert Nachrichten posten oder teilen und damit den politischen Diskurs online unverhältnismäßig stark beeinflussen können. Sie werden in sozialen Medien dazu benutzt, Zustimmung oder Ablehnung gegenüber gewissen Themen zu erzeugen und können daher als nichtmenschliche Akteure realen politischen Diskurs entscheidend beeinflussen. Größere mediale Aufmerksamkeit erhielten sie vor allem nach zwei Wahlen im Jahr 2016, die sowohl politisch, als auch medial, große Paradigmenwechsel auslösten. Sowohl im Referendum um den Brexit, als auch bei der Wahl Donald Trumps wurde viel über Social Media Bots berichtet, die gezielt Falschinformationen verbreiteten, um das Wahlergebnis zu beeinflussen.
Meine Installation ist eine automatisierte Performance. Sie besteht aus einer Serie von mechanischen Apparaturen, die menschlichen Applaus nachahmen und einen ganzen Raum mit ihrem Sound einnehmen können. Anders als in sozialen Medien, wo reale und Fake-Profile einfach miteinander verschwimmen, soll die Serie aus Apparaten ein greifbareres Bild davon vermitteln, wie das Gegenübersein von realen Personen und automatisierten Skripten heute aussieht.
Da sie alle auf der Konstruktion von Fotostativen basieren, könnten sie, flexibel wie modulare Bühnensysteme, von einem Ort zum anderen, einer Veranstaltung zur anderen und einer Ideologie zur anderen transferiert werden.

Bot Armies are big collections of fake social media profiles that can automatically post or share large amounts of messages. They are used to generate approval or rejection of certain topics and influence our political discourse as non-human agents. These computer programs received a lot of media attention after two elections in 2016 that triggered major political paradigm shifts. After the Brexit-referendum and the election of Donald Trump, social media bots were blamed for purposefully spreading false information online in order to influence the election result.
My installation is an automated performance. It consists of a series of mechanical devices that imitate human applause and can fill an entire room with their sound. In contrast to social media, where real and fake profiles simply blur with one another, the series of devices is intended to convey a more tangible picture of the confrontation between real people and artificial, nonhuman agents today.
Since they are all based on the construction of tripods, they can easily be — similar to modular stage systems — from one place to another, one event to another, and one ideology to another.
